Op 13 september is Roald Dahl jarig en dat wordt elk jaar gevierd. Een geniale schrijver, een intens figuur privé (de biografie “Storyteller” van Donald Sturrock is een aanrader). Voor mij zijn zijn boeken onlosmakelijk verbonden met de tekeningen van Quentin Blake. De onnavolgbare stijl van Blake – 85 intussen – is bedrieglijk simpel, een beetje piekerig. En toch zit er onmiskenbaar veel leven en emotie in zijn krabbels. Een oersterke observator, die niet verleerd is om voluit te tekenen. Kijk maar hoe onbevangen hij een Hornswoggler op papier tovert.
De mooiste quotes van Quentin Blake:
- ‘I do like children, but only as people. Not as if they’re a special category.’
- ‘I’ve always thought that the writer is the front end of the horse, as it were.’
- ‘If you draw, you find out things that perhaps you didn’t know. I’ve occasionally had to encourage people to do it…. You draw, and you think, I don’t draw very well, and that doesn’t look much like it, does it? But if you go away from what you’re drawing and look at it later, there will be something in there that you saw, you will have taken away something from what it is.
